quicksand
2016
Artist's book with archival digital prints. CLAMSHELL BOX ENCLOSURE.
An artist book that includes fragments from The Book of Sand by Jorge Luis Borges and is an exploratory reinterpretation of the text, which explores themes of infinity, nonlinearity, and mystery. To explore the entire text, the book is constructed with two sides.
Named quicksand to recall the natural phenomenon in which sand becomes liquefied soil, causing a state of instability, the book is meant to be read in any order or manner. Like quicksand, the best way to enjoy, or endure, the book is to let the natural process present its way out for you. For those who seek order to folding the pages, alphabetical characters (a–x) serve as optional page markers on both sides.
The text was both hand-lettered by the artist and set in Alegreya and Alegreya Sans, a typeface family designed by Juan Pablo del Peral of the Huerta Tipográfica type foundry. Images were created through a combination of digital photographic and scanning processes, printed on Azuka paper. Produced in an edition of 8 copies. Dimensions variable; approx. 5.5" wide by 5.5" high when closed and 16.5" x 16.5" when opened from all flaps.
